It also makes enemies extremely predictable as you only have to worry about dealing with gnomes, meteor heads, and critters in the farm environment. Meteorite biomes have an increased spawn rate and spawn cap while also still allowing for gnome and critter spawns. While this is not necessary, it does speed up your GPM (gnomes-per-minute). Early on, I would recommend using explosives, though not too close to the tree. This is done to increase the spawn zone for the gnomes and make it easier for them to see you. I mined mine out down to the chest room, but you could go even further if you wanted. Step 2: Mine out one side of the world tree. No natural living tree backwall, no gnomes ( EDIT: This is only half-true, see Ecchonya's comment down below). Be extremely careful when hammering around these/dropping explosives as to not destroy them as these are where the gnomes come from.
